Pay Attention

I read a lot. And doing so, I find more and more people who write, or speak, pay less and less attention to the fundamentals of the English language. Mispellings, comma splicing, slang, racial slurs, improper uses of the word "its", and dangle their participles! Perhaps it's time to call our language "American." Heck, we don't owe any allegience to the English. In fact, I believe Dr. Bernard Shaw was correct in saying that the English and American people are separated by a common language. Now, I don't profess to be perfect when it comes to writing. I probably make more mistakes than I catch. But, before we put it in print, maybe we should ask someone else to read it first. Or, at least, pay attention to what we are saying. Perhaps, if people were to stop long enough to realize what is coming out of their mouths, they might prevent a lot of embarassment later on. On the other hand if what we say, and print, doesn't fit into the English language, then maybe it's time to call it American. I'm for that!
